With the triumph of video games in the late 1970s, names were born that are still familiar today: Atari and Nolan Bushnell, Apple and Steve Jobs, Pac-Man and Tōru Iwatani. Others remained silent, undiscovered, forgotten, silenced. Until today.
This is the inspiring story of Ed Smith, an African American who grew up in the slums of Brownsville, Brooklyn, and became one of the first people to design video games and personal computers. "Imagine That!" chronicles his rocky journey from a neighbourhood of violence, drugs and poverty to downtown Manhattan, where he worked as a member of the APF Electronics design team, creating the "MP1000" video game system and "The Imagination Machine" personal computer. Later stops included Apple and Novell.
In his own words, he illustrates life in a society torn apart by racism and lack of opportunity, where the good jobs were only available to those with the right skin colour, and where you could not expect fairness from the police.
